Tech Innovations
From establishing the clinical evidence for robotic surgical systems to building AI-infused platforms, Dr. Kassam has founded four technology companies that translate clinical insight into deployed, scalable healthcare technology.
Synaptive Exoscope
Co-Founder · First Clinical Use
As a co-founder of Synaptive Medical (2012–2015), Dr. Kassam was the first surgeon to operate with the company’s robotic exoscope and led the work that established its clinical evidence base. The system pairs a robotically positioned digital exoscope with diffusion-weighted, image-guided planning, enabling transulcal access along the brain’s natural corridors. His team’s 200-patient series in Neurosurgical Focus reported feasibility and safety across cranial applications, with the surgical goal achieved in all 200 cases.
First Clinical Use
First surgeon to operate with the Synaptive exoscope, and first author of the two-part series in Innovative Neurosurgery defining exoscopic-assisted transulcal corridors
200-Patient Series
Senior author of the feasibility and safety study in Neurosurgical Focus; the surgical goal was achieved in all 200 cases
First in Asia
Supported the first robotically-assisted brain surgery in Asia at Ho Chi Minh City’s People’s 115 Hospital. 1.5 hours vs. 4 hours classical.

Intelligent Systems for Healthcare
Dr. Kassam's team of data science engineers has built AI-infused platforms that span predictive modeling, clinical research, and digital mental health, each designed to solve a specific problem in healthcare delivery.
Predictive Analytics
Anticipating surges before they happen
Web-based multi-parametric predictive COVID modeling that anticipated surges, forecast hospital bed capacity, and informed strategic planning across health systems. Models were validated by multiple resources and proved directionally accurate in predicting the second wave.
Machine Learning in Clinical Research
Intelligent systems for recruitment and retention
Machine learning algorithms that address the two biggest failures in clinical research: patient recruitment and retention. These systems use selectable inclusion criteria for digital recruitment, automated compliance monitoring, and integrated data analysis to reduce the time and cost of producing actionable results.
AI Conversation Systems
Natural language interfaces for behavioral health
Artificial intelligence conversation entities that provide responsive, context-aware dialogue for mental health and wellness applications. These systems integrate upstream peer support with automated behavioral health monitoring to extend clinical reach beyond traditional in-person encounters.
The Entrepreneurial Ecosystem
Over two decades, Dr. Kassam has founded four technology start-up companies and held board and advisory roles in others, each constructed to create underlying platforms for clinical innovations. This serial entrepreneurship reflects a consistent pattern: identifying unsolved problems at the bedside, building the technology to solve them, and deploying it at scale.
Every technology Dr. Kassam has built traces back to a problem identified in the operating room. The Expanded Endonasal Approach required better visualization, leading to exoscopic robotic systems. Deep brain surgery required safer access, leading to port-based parafascicular techniques guided by the White Matter Chassis atlas.
Technology in Service of Patients
Dr. Kassam's technology innovations exist for one reason: to offer patients a trusted care plan that puts them at the center. Whether you represent a health system exploring technology-enabled care delivery or a technology company seeking clinical insight, we welcome the conversation.
